Crittercal Success Factor?

We’re wondering how many French wine producers picked up on the ‘critters’ wine label design thing in the U.S. and to a certain extent other anglo markets ?

The trend took hold a few years back and shows no sign of abating. Research carried out in the U.S. indicated that Americans were twice as likely to buy a new wine if the label featured ‘a critter’ (an animal) on the label. We imagine it makes the wine seem less stuffy and more approachable.

Apart from taking a marketing-led approach to producing their wines, no points for guessing what Fat Bastard, Funny Bunny, Chamarré and Arrogant Frog have all got in common?

Funny Bunny

Here’s an innovative packaging move and one which is environmentally friendly. We read that wine in tetra pak is already well accepted in Canada and Scandinavia. What’s more - the wine is drinkable too. We like the querky communication and the marketing buzz Boisset (America) are trying to create. Apparently French Rabbit was awarded a 2006 SIAL d’Or as the best new alcoholic product in the world. Bit much!! but brave marketing. http://www.frenchrabbit.fr/vins.php

Boxing Clever

It’s high time there was more innovation in French bag-in-box designs. We’d never seen any design other than predictable-traditional, until recently we picked up on the funky design of these wine boxes from the Cercle des Vignerons de Provence (http://www.cercle-provence.fr/marques/F_Red-Pink_White-Box.htm).

Hopefully the next great boxed wine breakthrough will be a decent French red offering! If anyone’s come across one on the French market, please let us know.

Pink Panther Plonk

We’ve long believed that those wine producers and cooperatives with large volumes of wine to sell each year have little to lose (IF they negotiate the contract astutely) from experimenting with adult licensed properties to make their wines more approachable for young adults and novice wine drinkers around the world. So 10 out of 10 for bravery(?) to Le Chateau de l’Orangerie in Bordeaux for http://www.pink-panther-wine.com/.

Does anyone know of any other interesting link ups between French wine and properties from the world of art, fashion, entertainment, brands, publishing, etc ?

..and on the Palate

……This opulent wine, rich in tannins, leaves a prosperous lingering on the palate.

……A silky, velvet-like palate with wild, braised notes

……Glides like velvet of the palate

…….Best served with : sea-urchin coral sauce

…….Deep dress, garnet with skated nuances

…….Tannins are fine, delicate, melted by 30 wooden months

Who are you calling a Fat Bastard?

…this querky and very successful French brand  specifically created for anglo markets.  Great marketing. http://www.clickwinegroup.com/fatbastard/our-story.php

Hurray, hurray for Chamarré

Piat d’Or has been the best selling single export French wine brand since the late 70’s, thanks to astute and sustained marketing effort. But many in the French wine & spirit industry have long looked down their noses at the Piat d’Or and its overt marketing approach…. until now. Hats off to the smart thinkers behind Chamarré and wishing them success.

Arrogant Frog

As Vinglish is based in France, we only recently stumbled on this wonderfully tongue-in-cheek brand targetting export markets while trawling the internet.  Congrats to the creator and his “humble winemaker”! http://www.arrogantfrog.fr/

Just how do you translate ‘gourmand’?

Today we came across the following curious ‘trad’ on a French wine site :

“Greedy Fair in Pouilly sur Loire :
Sunday, April the 6th in Pouilly sur Loire, a greedy fair is organized mingling local products and local wines. This is an opportunity for the various brotherhood to enthrone new members. Admission free.”
